Unusual March Trends

2008 has been a very prosperous year for me. I’m averaging $1500-$2000/month with various forms of affiliate income. I was predicting around $1800 just from CJ for March alone. All things were looking good until the last five days. Suddenly my sales have dipped to less than 10 / day, which is very unusual. I usually average around 30-50 sales per day.

Paying attention to the eBay Forum as well as Digital Point, I’m not seeing the usual chatter about low sales all or tracking issues. Could this be related to the eBay EPN switch? Could I be a part of a small subset of tracking errors? I’m not sure. But it could be a reflection of overall market trends. One of the decisions I try to focus on when creating a niche site, is to NOT focus on seasonal sites, but sites that generate throughout the year. With that said, what could determine the change of events?

January better than December.. How can this be?

December was my largest month to date with a total $1400+ in CJ. I pushed hard in October and November to catch some of the X-mas action, and I did get a slice of it. I was quite pleased with the results. One thing that I noticed immediately after Christmas was that sales continued? I figured it was still related to holiday buzz, so I didn’t take much stock into it. But by mid January, may sales were still continuing at record pace?? Sure enough my commissions actually exceeded December! They haven’t locked yet, but I’m looking $1585 for the month in CJ.

Here is a break down of commissions, sales and leads. I wanted to show you this, since there is some useful information to present.

eBay.. what’s up with the batch?

I’ve seen a few posts where people are saying that haven’t seen sales since the 3rd of February, but are still receiving ACRU signups. People are also freaking out that this might be a tracking issue like what happened in Spring 2007. Along those lines people are also confused that CJ is not reporting a delay.

First off, you must understand the system. eBay updates your sales/commissions at CJ once a day, and this process is their batch update. ACRU is handed differently, and is basically handled in real time, this is why you see ACRUs but no sales. The difference between this problem and what happened in Spring 2007 is that in Spring 2007 there were daily batches, and clicks reports showed consistent clicks, but no sales were reported. This problem “appears” to be batch related. This could still be a tracking issue that eBay is trying to resolve, and this might be the reason for not updating the batch.

To understand when eBay submits a batch just log into CJ and scroll down on the home page. You’ll see a box area called ‘My Advertisers’ with a drop down containing all of your merchants. Simply select eBay and press ‘Go!’.

December numbers locked at CJ

All I have to say is that now I’m a full believer that money can be made with CJ. I’ve been making a few bucks consistently over the months for 2007, but December was my big push for the Christmas buying frenzy. The numbers finally locked yesterday for December, and my total was $1466.90, including eBay performance incentive! Counting AdSense, banner sales for the month, donations, etc. I ended up with a grand total of $1700. For the year, my net was $8500. My original goal was $10,000 for 2007, but I feel good about where I ended for the year. I definitely 2008 will be a very productive year. I wanted to post these numbers to help inspire the new recruits out there trying to make a buck or two. This time last year, I was making about $100 per month
